Hatfield and McCoys

Are we related to the Hatfield's and the McCoy's? Since the series is on the History Channel I thought I'd do a little research. 

Kevin Coster plays Willliam Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Wikipedia says he is a descendant of Ephraim Hatfield born in 1765 in Washington County, VA. So here it goes:

William is one of 11 children. He was born in 1839 to Ephraim "Big Eaf" (b. 1812 Sprigg, Mingo Co., West Virginia and d. 1881 Newtown, Fayette Co., WV) and Nancy Vance (b. about 1813).

Ephraim's parents were Valentine (born in Russell County, VA in 1789) and Martha (born in Washington Co., VA in 1789).

Valentine's parents were Ephraim Hatfield (b. in 1765 in Washington County, Virginia, died on 13 Oct 1847 in Blackberry Creek, Pikeville, Kentucky at age 82, and was buried in Hatfield Memorial Cemetery, Pike County, Kentucky) and Mary Smith (b. 1754 in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware).

Ephraim is the brother of Ale Hatfield, father of Mordeca Ale, father of Daniel Boone Hatfield, father of Wesley Mordecai Hatfield, father of Harvey Daniel Hatfield, who is the father of Volney Karl Hatfield.

So, yes we are related. William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield's great-grandfather Ephraim is my 5 great-grandfather Ale's brother.

Other factoids:

1. Ironically, the feud started because Jim Vance (the crazy uncle) killed a McCoy who fought for the Union and returned early from the war with a broken leg. Our 3 great grandfather (Daniel Boone) served three years in the Civil War serving with the North. He was in Company G, 97th Infantry and was wounded in the right thigh at Buzzards Roost. He then served as guard after his recovery and was discharged July 16, 1865. He is buried in Los Angeles in the Rosedale Cemetery.
2. The name Vance shows up several times in our ancestry, first with Joseph Hatfield's in-laws who came from Ireland.
3. William McCoy emigrated from Ireland in the 1750's to Doe Hill, VA and the the Robert and Sarah McClenahan emigrated from Ireland in the 1740's and founded the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church near Staunton, Virginia, just 50 miles away.

Camino de Santiago Day Thirty-seven and Thirty-eight: We made it!

A Salceda to Santiago de Compostela We decided to walk 22km to the outskirts of Santiago and walk the last few kilometers in the morning. Neither of us could sleep, so we got up, packed our mochilas for the last time and walked to the old city at 5am. It was dark and rather than being joined by other pilgrims, we passed a few late night partiers and a woman walking her dog. It's not the entrance into Santiago we pictured, but we were all alone in the Praza do Obradoiro in front of the Cathedral. It was June 17 — thirty-eight days and 780 kilometers since we started May 11, in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. We were two of the first ten pilgrims in line for our compostelas , which meant we got tickets for a free lunch at the historic parador. Camino de Santiago Day Thirty-four to Thirty-six

Gonzar to Melide to A Salceda Today we completed two 30km days in a row and we are within 25km of Santiago. We've walked over 700km from Saint Jean Pied de Port, France, for more than a month.  And after two days of rain, the sun came out and the sky was clear and blue.  We stopped in Melide for the night where we found an amazing vegetarian-vegan restaurant Casa Alongo run by Concha. She was happy to speak English and share her passion for fresh, local food. After a Camino of meat and typical pilgrim meals, it was a great find. She served us grilled vegetables with avocado aioli and  tostada de pulpo-- Galician bread toast with local cheese and octopus. . One bar along the road has bottled their own La Peregrina lager and invites pilgrims to write something on the bottle and decorate the patio.
